US Route 219 Arch Bridges near Ashford, NY, between Cattaraugus County and Erie County

Erdman Anthony was retained by arch erector Cornell and Company, a subcontractor to Cold Spring Construction on this $85 million project. The goal was to have Erdman Anthony prepare erection plans for approval by NYSDOT. The firm worked closely with staff engineers and project managers at Cornell and designed a unique tie-back system that provided temporary support for arch-rib erection.

Rather than using an independent guyed temporary tower with tie backs, or tall falsework bents from the forge base, the team decided to make use of the new permanent steel bents located on the backs of the arch skewbacks. Lugs were welded to the bent top to receive two fore ties that would facilitate arch-rib segment erection and one back tie stayed by a concrete mass founded with steel piles and rock anchors.
