Erdman Anthony provided final design services for this interchange and
expressway reconstruction project as a major engineering subconsultant. The
project involves construction of two new interchanges on Interstate 80: a
high-speed interchange between I-80 and I-99, and an interchange between I-80
and PA Route 26. Erdman Anthony completed field survey, right-of-way plan
development, and structural design support for both interchanges, as well as
highway design services for the I-80/Route 26 interchange and reconstruction of
3.5 miles of Interstate 80 mainline.
Erdman Anthony's portion of the structural design included design of two
culverts and one set of dual bridges just over 100 feet in length in the
I-80/I-99 interchange. Our staff also designed a 520-foot structure in the
I-80/PA Route 26 interchange. Maintenance and protection of traffic was a
critical issue. Crossovers were designed on Interstate 80, and other measures
(such as temporary roadways, lane closures, flagging operations, and detours)
were used on two-lane highways in the project vicinity. Other key issues
included continuation of a public involvement program established during
preliminary engineering, environmental mitigation (minimizing wetland, farmland,
and business impacts), and providing expedited property plats for three
displacements identified during the project's preliminary phase. ITS equipment
was specified for both interchanges, including closed-circuit cameras and
pavement sensors that automatically determine when the bridges need to be
