Erdman Anthony served as a subconsultant for this I-84/I-87 Interchange Project,
located in Newburgh, NY that provides a direct connection between Interstate
I-84 (east/westbound) and Interstate I-87 (north/southbound). Prior to the
construction motorists were required to exit the interstate system and utilize
the state highway system to travel between these two major interstate highways.
This project connected I-84 and I-87 using numerous entrance ramps, exit ramps,
fly-over ramps, and toll collection facilities all incorporated into a grade
separated interchange site which also includes a NYS Police facility, a NYS
Thruway Office Building, and a NYS Thruway maintenance facility . Erdman
Anthony's bridge design incorporates a steel plate girder and concrete isotropic
deck acting as a composite superstructure. The two-span continuous design
utilizes the center pier located with the existing median of Route I-84.
Abutment and pier footings were designed as spread footings, with the abutment
footing built on a structural fill system that is supported by the mechanically
stabilized earth structure (MSES) wall system. The (MSES) wall systems designed
reduced slope construction and right-of-way acquisition costs for the sprawling
interchange. In addition, Erdman Anthony's 3-Phase Erosion & Sediment
Control Plans provided erosion and pollution control resulting from the large
project area. The 3-Phase Erosion & Sediment Control Plans were design to
work in conjunction with the proposed three-phase construction sequence and
Traffic Control Plans. The water and sewer mains and appurtenances were designed
to serve the new site and buildings sited within the interchange area.
