M&H Railroad over Swatara Creek

Erdman Anthony performed an in-depth structural inspection, load rating, and rehabilitation design of the Middletown & Hummelstown railroad bridge over Swatara Creek. The historic 3-span bridge was built in 1890 and consisted of riveted deck-plate girders with cut stone masonry piers and abutments.

Key project features included:

  • In-depth condition inspection of all structural components and degree of deterioration.

  • Load rating with various load case scenarios, impact factors and speed reduction factors.

  • Short- and long-term repair recommendations to maximize the structure's service life.

  • Recommendation of temporary repairs to the deteriorated deck timbers to allow for safe operation of slow-ordered traffic.

  • Design of a permanent deck replacement with timbers sized to match the load capacity of the steel superstructure.
