Conrail Clearance Improvements

bridge locations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Erdman Anthony team designed the raising or replacement of six bridges on a fast-track schedule to facilitate the shipping of double-stack intermodal containers from the Port of New York/New Jersey to various Midwest destinations. The locations and work included:

  • Raising CSX's single-track Lurgan Subdivision bridge over Conrail in Chambersburg, PA. The 75-foot, single-span, thru-girder bridge was raised 3 feet and included modification of the existing abutment backwalls, bearing rehabilitation, preparation of jacking procedure, analysis of structure for jacking loads, and approach-track profile realignment.

  • Raising a 70-foot single-span thru-girder bridge 1½ feet in Montgomery County, PA.

  • Replacing a 3-span timber bridge with a single-span steel multi-girder bridge in Pennington, NJ.

  • Replacing a 4-span timber and steel thru-girder bridge with a single-span steel multi-girder bridge in Middlesex, NJ.

  • Rehabilitating a 3-span timber bridge in Carroll Township, PA.

  • Raising a 70-foot single-span pony truss bridge 3 feet in Hummelstown, PA.

Erdman Anthony designed the adjacent intersection modifications associated with the new alignments and coordinated utility relocations to ensure that there was no disruption to service in the area. In addition, our project team prepared extensive detour plans to minimize traffic impacts, a challenging issue because there were very few railroad crossings in the area.

The speed and efficiency that Erdman Anthony demonstrated in completing the bridge modifications gave Conrail the clearance they needed with minimal disruptions to surrounding roadways. Our timely project completion allowed Conrail to implement new shipping methods very quickly, resulting in increased revenue for them.
