U.S. Routes 22/322 Lewistown Narrows

Erdman Anthony provided preliminary engineering and final design services for improvements to a 6.5-mile section of US 22/322 (SR 0022, Sections A09, A10, and A11) as a major engineering subconsultant. The previous two-lane roadway, which ran through a geographically restricted corridor between the Juniata River and Shade Mountain, was replaced by a four-lane, limited access expressway. The highway provides an important link between Pennsylvania State University's main campus and the Harrisburg metropolitan area and points east.

Erdman Anthony's portion of the design included more than 22,000 feet of retaining walls, one along the river and one supporting a bifurcated section of mainline. Highway stability along steep slopes was a key concern our staff addressed with independent pile remediation consisting of both H-piles and micropiles. Our staff also completed a hydrologic and hydraulic report on the Juniata River and five tributaries, and designed a storm water system that includes over 490 inlets and 5,400 linear feet of cross culvert, in addition to spring boxes and swales. Due to the project's location in a detailed FEMA study area, Erdman Anthony prepared a Conditional Letter of Map Revision to redefine the 100-year flood boundary. The completed highway, which has been heralded as a noteworthy engineering feat in local and national trade publications, will improve both travel times and traffic safety. The project also restored a section of the historic Pennsylvania Canal, remodeled a lock keeper's house into a park and educational center, and provided ramps to a boat launch on the Juniata River.
