Erdman Anthony provided design services for the reconstruction of 1.3 miles
of highway, including the drainage system along U.S. Route 20A/state Route
16/state Route 78, and Main Street between the traffic circle and the east
Village line in East Aurora. The project included topographic survey and
mapping, right-of-way mapping, analysis of several design alternatives, grading
and drainage design, utility coordination, traffic signage, pavement markings,
street lighting, landscaping, pavement design, and traffic maintenance. Our team
investigated various layouts to provide safe and efficient operation for
vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians. Context-sensitive design solutions were
investigated and applied to maintain and improve the Village’s characteristics.
A coordinated traffic signal system was installed to improve traffic flow.
Erdman Anthony also designed a roundabout to replace the existing traffic circle
and evaluated design options for additional roundabouts in the project area.
This project also included replacement of the entire water distribution and
sanitary sewer collection systems within the project boundaries. Approximately
7,000 linear feet of existing vitrified clay tile sewers were replaced with a
like amount of new PVC pipe ranging in diameter from 8 inches to 24 inches.
Approximately 40 old brick manhole structures were replaced with precast
concrete units. More than 200 new laterals were installed from the new sewer
mains to right-of-way lines throughout the project limits. Vortex chambers were added to help facilitate separation of storm and sanitary flows. Design of this
project coincided with the Village of East Aurora turning over the operation and
maintenance of its sanitary sewer system to an Erie County Sewer District, so
the project had to be designed to ECSD standards and coordinated with them as
well. Another notable aspect of this project was the reconnection of a
significant number of live sewers emanating from numerous side streets along
Main Street. This required a great deal of around-the-clock sewer bypass
pumping. Erdman Anthony worked closely with the Village and County to ensure
that pumping would be conducted in the largely residential neighborhoods with
minimal disruption and inconvenience.
Our team performed the required environmental studies, including coordination
with the State Historic Preservation Office, geotechnical survey and mapping,
and video survey of the existing drainage system. The oblique aerial photographs
from a helicopter that we obtained were also included in the project scope. In
addition, Erdman Anthony analyzed social, economic, and environmental
considerations for each of the design alternatives and provided assistance with
permits and certifications and a visual-impact assessment of the project
This project called for considerable public involvement, including
coordination with a community task force and numerous public meetings. Erdman
Anthony maintained a project newsletter and website, attended public events to
disseminate information about this high-profile project and provided the
detailed highway design.
