Erdman Anthony provided structural and mechanical design for the complete
replacement of an 85' x 200' rink slab for the Blue Cross Arena at the War
Memorial in Rochester, NY. The slab design included tight tolerance for specific
flatness and levelness criteria. The unique concrete placement and finishing
issues required special construction details, insert installation, and material
specification. In addition, our team replaced a refrigeration piping system that
consisted of 51,000 lf of welded pipe, the equivalent of 9.6 mi of piping.
Erdman Anthony represented the owner throughout the project's planning,
estimating, design, bidding, pre-construction, and construction phases. Our
structural design included a concrete slab to house the cooling system piping,
new in-slab circus rigging inserts, anchors for the goal inserts, and new
inserts that required strict layout to reuse the existing dasher boards.
Refrigerant headers and distribution piping were incorporated in the mechanical
design, as well as a new automated controls system.
