Hochstein Performance Hall

Erdman Anthony designed mechanical and electrical renovations for the Hochstein School of Music, a premier performing arts institution dedicated to providing music and dance opportunities for the community in Rochester, NY. This unique facility comprises three buildings, two of which formerly served as churches. Renovations focused on implementing state-of-the-art HVAC and lighting features in the performance hall, located in one of the historic church buildings.

To minimize performance disruptions and maintain the performance hall's superb acoustics, the HVAC equipment was located on an adjacent roof and connected to the attic space for distribution throughout the building. Ductwork silencers were installed within the low velocity air-handling system. These solutions minimized ambient noise and vibration, ensuring a suitable venue for recordings and performances while creating a comfortable, climate-controlled auditorium. To further meet the stringent humidity, temperature, and noise level specifications, Erdman Anthony tied the air-handling unit in with an existing ice storage system, saving $50,000 in installation costs while providing ongoing utility savings. Erdman Anthony incorporated portions of the existing HVAC system into the new design to help this not-for-profit institution maximize funding, and we implemented an energy management system to save $16,000 yearly.

Erdman Anthony's electrical design installed new stage lighting and new light fixtures for the entire hall. The selected fixtures matched the building's architectural characteristics while meeting current code requirements for emergency lighting. Furthermore, programmable colored neon lighting was added in the roof dome to complement the performance hall's distinctive aesthetic features and enhance the performance atmosphere. Erdman Anthony's attention to detail, responsiveness to the client's needs, and creative design solutions successfully transformed the Hochstein Performance Hall into a modern, world-class musical venue while maintaining the historic building's architectural and artistic integrity. This accomplishment earned the 2000 Engineering Excellence Award, Gold Medal, and gained worldwide recognition for the institution.
