Binghamton University Science Building Addition

Challenged by a growing need for science research and educational space Binghamton University called upon Erdman Anthony to provide the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering services for a 70,000 sq ft addition to the Science III/IV campus complex. The new structure features BSL-2 laboratories, research and classroom labs, surgical suites and support facilities with seamless system connections to the existing 245,000 sq ft campus science center.

Utilizing extensive Building Information Modeling (BIM) Erdman Anthony engineers were able to validate that the science center addition could be constructed as designed helping to conserve critical construction funding as well as maintaining project schedule. The engineering design featured a new chiller plant, dedicated air handling units, a double ended load center, emergency power generation to maintain life safety and critical loads, a NFPA fire alarm system for the entire science complex, and a high pressure fire main for the new construction. The design also included accommodations for wet chemistry labs including exhaust systems for perchloric acid hoods, radioactive hoods and supporting chemical systems.
