The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is a regional governmental
agency that oversees the water resources in the southern half of the state, from
Orlando to the Florida Keys. The agency is responsible for managing and
protecting water resources by balancing and improving water quality, flood
control, natural systems and water supply.
To better manage and protect
the water resources the SFWMD wanted to consolidate its operations, including
laboratory, office space and staff. Erdman Anthony provided design services in
support of the consolidation that included demolition of a two-story building
for replacement with a $13 million, 36,000 sq ft facility. The new facility will
be state-of-the-art, capable of resisting high wind velocities with limited or
no damage, and have the emergency backup systems capable of self-sustaining
operations for seven days. The proposed electric service is 480/277 volt,
3-phase service with step down transformers to derive 120/208 volt secondary
power. The backup power for the new lab building will be provided by a
diesel-fueled standby generator set installed adjacent to the building.
The SFWMD is pursuing (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
LEED Certification for this building with the desire for a sustainable,
efficient, Green building.
