Erdman Anthony completed preliminary engineering, final design, and construction consultation for replacement of the deteriorating Auburn Arch Bridge, a three-span reinforced concrete arch structure over the Schuylkill River in Pennsylvania. The replacement bridge is a 225-foot, two-span prestressed concrete bulb-tee superstructure supported by a wall pier and cantilever abutments.
A variety of environmental considerations, as well as structure hydraulics, were key design issues. Replacing the structure required consideration of multiple natural features in the project area, the most significant of which was the Schuylkill River itself. A successful design approach allowed our team to obtain environmental clearance using a Level 1b Categorical Exclusion Evaluation, rather than the anticipated Level 2 CEE. A key engineering issue was the realignment of approach roadways and the bridge so that traffic could be effectively maintained during construction. As part of this project, Erdman Anthony's project team coordinated with the Schuylkill River Greenway Association (SRGA) on the relocation of trail and parking facilities. The final right-of-way, utility, and permitting components were put out for design/build bidding to expedite project completion. The resulting replacement bridge provides less river encroachment and offers improved access to the waterway for recreational use.
