Bates Road Reconstruction

Bates Road Reconstruction

The Town of Shelby’s project involved reconstruction of Bates Road to improve the roadway's structural integrity. Improvements were needed to accommodate industry along the corridor, which included Western New York Energy, BMP America, the future Medina Business Park, Orchard Manor Residential Health Facility, Hill Construction and Brunner International. The safety of pedestrians, bicyclists, and motor vehicles, while respecting the integrity of the project area, was a primary concern.

The project involved reconstruction of approximately 0.60 miles of roadway and a new full-depth pavement section, shoulders, and drainage improvements along the corridor. The typical section consists of 12’ travel lanes and 4’ shoulders (both full depth). Key elements for this project included a pavement section to accommodate commuter and truck traffic; drainage design to alleviate standing water; coordination with utility service providers and with the Falls Road Railroad in relation to the railroad grade crossing just south of Route 31; and implementation of a public participation program to guide the project through the planning and design process.

This project included the construction of bioswales as a practical and effective technique for controlling runoff quality. Bioswales increase contact time, and during small storm events contribute to successful pollutant removal. In this instance perennial grasses and purple coneflowers were placed in a select fill mixture to reduce runoff and improve local aesthetics.
