Duty Free Americas

Duty Free Americas was interested in establishing a new stand-alone duty free shop at the Peace Bridge Plaza in Buffalo, NY. This included the initiation and completion of construction and retail fit-out of an approximately 12,500 sq. ft. of combined retail and operational support space. Erdman Anthony provided the civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and structural engineering for the project.

Civil Site work for the new store required careful coordination with the ongoing project modifying the US Plaza of the Peace Bridge.  Entrances and exists to the new facility had to be aligned carefully to work within the plaza’s extremely busy traffic pattern and allow for safe ingress and egress. They also had to be located so as to not interfere with the regular operations of Homeland Security.  The site work included new parking areas, grading, site lighting, water, sewer, sidewalks, retaining walls, traffic controls and landscaping.  A key feature of the site development was the construction of a noise wall adjoining the site to reduce noise volumes in the adjoining neighborhood.  The wall was constructed to match the exterior of the facility and run along the entire length of the property along Busti Avenue.  Along the building the wall was integral with the new building’s west face.

The new HVAC system included nine gas fired high efficiency furnaces with electric-cooled condensing units. Our firm designed a central exhaust system for toilet room ventilation. Site constraints and building aesthetics prohibited the use of any rooftop or exterior HVAC equipment. All HVAC systems were designed to be located inside the building, integral to the architectural design.

The electrical design consisted of power, lighting, and security and fire alarm systems. The power system design included a new 600A, 120/208V service, from pole mounted Niagara Mohawk transformers, and distribution panel boards. General ambient lighting was designed in accordance with lighting quality recommendations made by the IESNA, energy requirements per the New York State Energy Conservation Construction code, and egress and emergency lighting requirements per the National Fire Protection Association. The retail sales floor, in addition to the ambient lighting consisted of spot lighting designed to highlight the merchandise to help with sales. Support for the telephone and data systems was included in the project. At the owner's request, a security system was provided that included CCTV surveillance.
