This $410,000 LAFA project includes a 10-foot-wide asphalt trail that connects the existing Cayuga waterfront trail and the Floral Avenue sidewalk network. The trail is also part of a greater vision, the Black Diamond Trail, which is planned to connect Taughannock Falls, Allan H. Treman, and Robert H. Treman state parks. The trail provides a safe means for pedestrians and bicyclists to access the City of Ithaca and its network of sidewalks and trails. The new trail’s side paths cross Floral Avenue near an apartment complex and one other mid-block location. High-visibility crosswalk striping, approach warning signage, and curb ramps were constructed to comply with ADAAG standards to ensure the safety of trail users. Pedestrian-scale solar lighting, bench areas with bike racks, and landscaping are included along the trail. Close coordination with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and the Army Corp of Engineers was required, as the trail was constructed along the west bank of the flood control channel. Erdman Anthony provided preliminary and final design as well as construction inspection services.
