The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission retained Erdman Anthony to provide construction inspection, project management services, and as-directed preconstruction services for the mainline bridge replacement of B-521A (milepost 172.88) and B-521B (milepost 172.89) in Fulton County, Pennsylvania. Construction-phase tasks included construction inspection, management, administration, documentation, and project closeout services.
Construction included the full replacement of the dual mainline bridges, B-521A eastbound at milepost 172.88 and B-521B westbound at milepost 172.89, on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76). The dual mainline bridges carry the turnpike over SR 4004 (North Hess Road). The project is located in Taylor Township, Fulton County, between the Fort Littleton (Exit 180) and the Breezewood (Exit 161) interchanges.
The new structures are three-span continuous composite steel multi-girder bridges. Each structure is 179 feet long and 58 feet wide (curb to curb) and accommodates three 12-foot travel lanes, one outside 12-foot wide shoulder, and one inside 10-foot wide shoulder for turnpike traffic. The end spans are 55 feet long, and the center span over SR 4004 is 69 feet long.
The replacement superstructure is supported by stub abutments with U-shaped wing walls and multi-column pier bents. The substructure is supported by point bearing steel piles.
The project also included painting the existing steel Sideling Hill Service Plaza Ramp Bridge located at milepost 172.43.
