Irondequoit Lakeside Multi-Use Trail

Erdman Anthony designed this 4.7-mi multi-use trail. The paved pedestrian and bicycle path connects Irondequoit's three major water features: Genesee River, Lake Ontario, and Irondequoit Bay. The trail system had been under consideration since 1999, but was delayed due to the inability to secure property rights along an old, inactive CSX railroad right-of-way. The trail design now includes sections adjacent to existing roads as well as separatetrails segments as it passes through Durand Eastman Park.

Initial site visits by the project team and Monroe County were conducted to evaluate possible constraints as well as opportunities along the corridor. Key issues addressed by Erdman Anthony during the design phase included right-of-way acquisition; environmental issues such as wetlands, floodplains, historic structures and sites; drainage issues; structural concerns; opportunities for views and vistas; and defensible space issues. Additional park amenities were also designed for the benefit of trail and park users. Consistency with both the City of Rochester's and the Town of Irondequoit's Local Waterfront Revitalization Program, was evaluated to ensure compliance with NYS Department of State Coastal Zone Management's regulations. Coastal zone consistency assessments documented the project's consistency with state and local coastal zone policies.

Coordination with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and US Army Corps of Engineers was required to obtain wetland permits. Close coordination with the Town of Irondequoit and public participation meetings were required for residential/business input.
