Tommy Hilfiger Laser Scanning

Erdman Anthony's laser scans served as the basis for the custom design of a new Tommy Hilfiger flagship store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The store will be situated in a substantially renovated turn-of-the-century building in the heart of Fifth Avenue, where retail rental rates command as much as $1,500 per square foot annually.

Erdman Anthony's client was Feature Factory Design Build, an international custom architectural fabricator. Feature Factory was commissioned to design an intricate staircase featuring spirally bent glass handrails, sculpted fiberglass, and halo-lit wooden treads. The staircase will spiral up through four stories.

Due to the age of the building, there were no recorded as-built drawings, and there was limited uniformity to the construction. The challenges that these conditions presented to the design team were mitigated by using a 3-D digital model, which Erdman Anthony prepared from laser scanning. Individual scans of the basement, mezzanine and first- through fourth-floor levels were registered together into one overall point cloud by first running a conventional survey traverse through the building. From each traverse point location, scanning targets with x, y, z values were established. The model contained the main structural elements and all plane surface features, such as walls, ceilings, and floors, and was developed with special software that best fits solid objects to scan points that are common to a specific feature.
The custom staircase was then virtually designed in place, within the 3-D model, ensuring that the finished product would connect properly to the base building steel in all the right places. Designing the stairwell along with surrounding building elements such as drywall, floor, and ceiling materials, etc. in 3-D also helps ensure that all shop-fabricated components fit properly when delivered to the site.
