Erdman Anthony provided comprehensive design services for the replacement of the Buffalo Road Bridge over Oatka Creek. Several issues with the existing bridge included failing foundations, debris getting caught on the superstructure during frequent flooding, and floodwaters overtopping the approach road. To alleviate these flooding issues, Erdman Anthony designed a replacement bridge consisting of adjacent prestressed concrete box beams with a composite concrete deck with a span length of 82 feet utilizing expanded polystyrene (Geofoam) fill and a large spread footing. This was the first use of Geofoam for bridge structural support in the United States. The bridge is currently being monitored by the Geofoam Research Center, located at Syracuse University, to gather information that will be used to develop design standards for future bridges where this material may be appropriate. Although this unique substructure was slightly more expensive than traditional foundations, the ease and speed of construction allowed for the project to be completed in the same construction season. Erdman Anthony's innovative design for this structure not only met all of the client's needs, but also earned the New York Association of Consulting Engineers' 2003 Gold Award for Engineering Excellence.
