In Port Royal, Pennsylvania, just west of the Juniata River, a stately concrete arch bridge carried PA Route 75 traffic over a vital railroad corridor for more than a century. But it was failing, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation needed to replace it. 

What to do about huge buttresses framing the bustling rail line was just one of many challenges the replacement effort posed.
