On November 30, 2021, NYSDOT Region 4’s I-390/I-490/Route 31 Interchange Improvement Project officially opened in Gates, New York.

This $172 million design-build project reduces congestion and enhances safety along a corridor vital for the flow of people and commerce in the Rochester area. Seven bridges were replaced or repaired; a new exit ramp connecting Interstate 390 to Lyell Avenue was created; and a new southbound I-390 flyover was constructed.

Other improvements included widened and resurfaced roads, new sidewalks and bicycle lanes, and concrete sound barriers featuring historic imagery of the nearby Erie Canal’s role in the state’s transportation system. Work took place in four phases over five years.

Erdman Anthony provided highway and bridge design and construction support for the project.
