Engineering Project Case Studies | Erdman Anthony

Field-Data Management

National Fuel Gas Supply Corporation retained Erdman Anthony in 2014 to complete the data management for two gas main installation projects in New York state's Southern Tier. The projects involved approximately 80 miles of pipeline through some very difficult terrain in Erie and Cattaraugus counties and included numerous interconnections and compressor stations throughout the service areas.

Erdman Anthony's field-data managers were responsible for constant coordination with the construction teams and supervised field-data staffers as they provided measurements, collected data, handled documentation, and performed quality checks in the field.

The field-data managers participated in daily and weekly project briefings and communicated with field and office staff continuously. They uploaded and sorted data in preparation for delivery to National Fuel Gas and reviewed project specifications to determine whether the data collection and documentation were performed according to the owner's requirements.

Erdman Anthony's field-data management staff was available seven days a week and was on-site 100 percent of the time during the pipe installation. Duties the field-data management team performed while accessing difficult terrain included:

  • Compiling observations, reports, and summaries of daily activities
  • Maintaining project survey control
  • Setting secondary survey control as needed
  • Collecting survey-grade GPS data points at locations specified for each work task
  • Measuring and logging quantities of gas main and appurtenances as installed

At the conclusion of this project, National Fuel Gas received a massive amount of data to document the completed construction activities accurately.
