Erdman Anthony provided preliminary design, final design, and construction support services for three culvert replacements in Maine: Dover-Foxcroft (State Route 15), Newburgh (Kennebec Road), and Newport (Route 222). The new culverts needed to be durable and provide safety improvements.
The structures included a 20-foot-wide three-sided reinforced-concrete frame, an 8-foot-diameter corrugated-metal pipe culvert, and a 12-foot-wide reinforced box culvert. The configurations resulted in enhanced roadway geometry, cross slopes and superelevations, and improved side slopes with adequate clear zones eliminated the need for guardrails.
Moreover, all three culverts now have a streambed width and a natural stream bottom that are hospitable to aquatic life.
Our designs for the three culverts emphasized structural longevity and helped restore tributaries for spawning trout and salmon.
