MEP and Fire Protection Design

Erdman Anthony coordinated with an architect to renovate the main lounges and improve the egress paths at Erie Residence Hall, a 70,000-square-foot building at SUNY Geneseo in Geneseo, NY. The systems renovated at the three-story structure on the north side of the campus included mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection. Besides the lounges, the renovated areas included bathrooms, laundry facilities, mechanical rooms, and kitchenettes.

Instead of a typical three-month summer timeline for renovations, SUNY Geneseo opted to leave the residence hall vacant for a school year to provide an extended renovation period. This decision provided additional time to upgrade multiple systems, including sprinklers, fire alarms, air handling units, exhaust fans, boilers, and pumps. In addition, our firm introduced a new DDC building-automation system throughout the residence hall.

Our electrical team also provided a new transformer, a new emergency generator, and new panel boards. Erie Residence Hall was constructed in the 1960s, and the electrical loads were still based on that decade’s demands. Today’s student requirements necessitate a much higher electrical load for televisions, computers, video gaming equipment, and other technological advances.
