Engineering Project Case Studies | Erdman Anthony

Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Design

THE PROJECTS
The Netherlands-based Ahold Delhaize, one of the world’s largest food retail groups, counts the Stop & Shop brand as part of its U.S. portfolio. Erdman Anthony has worked on new builds and renovations for the food retailer.

FEATURES/SOLUTIONS
In support of Ahold Delhaize’s net-zero energy goals, our firm designed all-electric heating for new Stop & Shop stores in New England by eliminating gas-powered heating equipment. For existing stores where an all-electric heating design was not possible, our designs called for using solar panels.

One of the renovations that our firm was involved with occurred on an island and required bringing in a new electrical service. Our designs supported the store’s ongoing operations, the transfer of the electrical service to an addition once the project was complete, and the installation of a full-store mobile generator should the weather cause any power outages.

IMPACTS
Besides wanting to shrink its heating-related carbon footprint, Ahold Delhaize sought to address dim lighting in the stores’ produce departments.  In response, our firm designed upgrades using energy-efficient LED fixtures that increased brightness to 70 foot-candles in those areas.

Our firm also designed housings for rooftop equipment units to mitigate noise for nearby residential properties.

SUSTAINABLE  DESIGN IMPACT
Food retailer Ahold Delhaize has turned to Erdman Anthony to mothball gas-powered heating equipment, mitigate noise, and introduce energy-efficient lighting.
