Bridge Rehabilitation

THE PROJECT
Located on the boundary of the rural towns of Jackson and Salem and serving the town of Shushan, this bridge over the Batten Kill River is not far from the Vermont border. This Locally Administered Federal Aid (LAFA) project resulted in a new superstructure consisting of a reinforced-concrete deck slab supported by metalized steel girders.

Erdman Anthony provided a full range of preliminary and final design services. The project required extensive coordination with adjacent landowners, the covered bridge association, utility companies, and environmental agencies.

FEATURES/SOLUTIONS
The substructures of the existing three-span bridge were retained, retrofitted, and rehabilitated, with minor modifications to accommodate the new configuration.

Abutments were semi-integrally converted to remove joints and provide a more resilient bridge. Pier caps were removed to improve conditions and accommodate new superstructure framing.

IMPACTS
Substructure concrete was coated with the color chosen by the town to improve the bridge’s aesthetics by providing a uniform surface between new and existing concrete. A Texas aesthetic concrete barrier and lighting were also used to enhance the overall look of this bridge, which is adjacent to and overlooks an historic covered bridge.
