Design, Energy Modeling, and Construction Support Services
THE PROJECT
Erdman Anthony provided engineering design, energy modeling, and construction support services for the reconstruction of the Equine Park at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. A prior structural investigation determined that repair and continued use of the existing main barn were not viable options.
FEATURES/SOLUTIONS
The new 15,000-square-foot facility will have an L-shaped horse barn with 30 stalls, a treatment area, a wash area, and storage space for tack, tools, feed, hay, and bedding. It also will have a conditioned wing featuring offices, a break room, toilet rooms, a 30-seat classroom, and a small lab.
A new 5,000-square-foot commodities barn with LED lighting is being built to provide more storage room for bedding, feed, and hay, and the barn will have new horse paddocks with heated horse waterers.
Sanitary drainage piping will serve all fixtures in the lab, break room, mechanical room, and barn.
IMPACTS
The modern, efficient, and animal-friendly facility will replace the obsolete main barn while simultaneously consolidating multiple programs into one convenient location.
Enhanced electrical, mechanical, and domestic water systems incorporating the latest technology will optimize energy efficiency. Our firm worked closely with the design team to select the best system options based on the life-cycle assessment, energy goals, and LEED requirements. LED lighting will be installed throughout the facility, and all mechanical systems comply with the Energy Conservation Construction of New York State and ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2016.
The facility was designed with teaching as its main function, so various technological capabilities will provide staff and students with the most interactive experience possible.
