Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Design
Erdman Anthony provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services for a new 21,000-square-foot oncology center for the Good Samaritan Health System in Lebanon, PA. The goal of the facility design was to provide a warm and nurturing space to address the needs of cancer patients and their families.
The new single-story family cancer center serves five basic functions: medical practice, research, business, infusion/chemotherapy, and LINAC /radiation. The building features 10 infusion bays, a CT scan, and a LINAC procedure room. The facility also houses exam and procedure rooms, physician offices, laboratory services, a pharmacy, and other ancillary spaces.
The mechanical design includes variable refrigerant volume heating and cooling system for the majority of the spaces, along with dedicated rooftop equipment to serve the LINAC, CT, and pharmacy spaces. An independent DOAS system provides for ventilating the building to department of health requirements. The pharmacy is designed for USP Chapter 797 compliance for pharmaceutical compounding of sterile preparations. The building is fully sprinkled and includes a limited medical gas system that interfaces with the campus oxygen farm.
The electrical design incorporates use of LED lighting fixtures to the greatest extent possible, which required intricate coordination between the architect and interior designer to create a warm and hospitable environment in the infusion bays. The vaults that house the LINAC and CT scan equipment were designed so that either type of machinery could be provided in each vault in the future.
