THE PROJECT
Big Y Foods, Inc. is a supermarket chain that operates over 70 stores in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Erdman Anthony provided HVAC, plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, and fire protection systems design, as well as construction support services for three of the chain’s new stores.
FEATURES/SOLUTIONS
The complexity of the stores, which ranged from 27,000 to 60,000 square feet, required significant coordination with the structural and interior components to confirm that visual and functional requirements were maintained, and conflicts between disciplines were minimized.
Our firm’s designs included exhaust systems for cooking suites and an in-store bakery; domestic water and filtered water systems; grease-trap systems; indirect waste systems; HVAC systems for cooling, heating, and dehumidification; and heat reclaim from refrigeration condensers to provide domestic water preheating.
Our firm also designed interior lighting, emergency lighting, and power distribution; refrigeration controls; the main electrical service with components for a full-store emergency generator; and multiple fire protection systems, including wet and dry systems under exterior canopies, that meet NFPA and FM Global requirements.
IMPACTS
In addition to designing essential systems for the new stores, our firm provided construction observation services to minimize delays.
