Engineering Project Case Studies | Erdman Anthony

Construction Inspection Services

The New York State Department of Transportation selected Erdman Anthony to provide construction inspection services for the rehabilitation of Chautauqua County Veterans Memorial Bridge on I-86 over Chautauqua Lake near Bemus Point, New York. The 24-span bridge sees heavy commercial traffic and is a vital economic link for communities in the Southern Tier.

Over the course of the project, roughly 5,300 feet of bridge deck will be replaced, and new median and side barriers will be installed. Bridge joints and high rocker bearings will also be replaced, and repairs to the superstructure will be done where needed.  In addition to the Chautauqua Bridge, two other approach span bridges and one ramp bridge to the east of the main span will also be rehabilitated.

With the main bridge seeing an average daily traffic count of 13,000 vehicles, bridge closures will be limited to nighttime hours, with at least one lane of traffic maintained in both directions during the day.

NYSDOT anticipates the rehabilitation work will double the lifespan of the bridge, which was completed in 1982.  The project is also expected to support the economic viability of the region through improving safety and ease of travel.

As NYSDOT’s construction inspection consultant, Erdman Anthony’s full-time on-site personnel will help administer the construction contract, provide documentation of the construction contractor’s operations, and monitor the project’s general conformance with construction plans, among other things.
Work on the bridge began in the summer of 2023 and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2026.
